I enjoyed watching this video because of how relevant it is today’s tech driven society. Before starting the video I tried to think about what it would be about based on the title and the description given to us by the professor. I hypothesized that it was going to discuss people who just visit the internet occasionally and people who live in it, or have very strong well known online personas. Furthermore, I assumed that it would discuss the differences between these to two types of people and talk about how one would be better suited for us all, which was not the case at all.
I loved his use of prezi to help visualize his talk. The use of key words and charts made it easier for me to get a better idea of how the visitor differs from the resident. I had to think hard about what I considered myself to be. At first, I thought I was resident because of how much I use social networks. I’m on there catching up with friends, sharing pictures, random thoughts, and keeping in touch with people that I don’t get to see in person on a regular basis. Then he mentioned how a resident “ creates and sells himself/herself as brand”. I didn’t really think that was something I was doing, which made me question if I was really a resident.
He then said that visitors are not really technologically challenged, but rather using the social networks as tools; which I thought I sometimes I do. There are times when I just need something quick, like a review of an item I am about to purchase. I’m on and I’m off. I don’t need to be on there for long periods of times. I need a “tool from the messy tool box” and I don’t want to waste time on social networking.
Then I remembered him saying that the these two were “more of a continuum than two separate things”. That made more sense because I realized that I am a bit of both. There are times when I’m a resident and other times when I am a visitor.
